EPA Continues Testing for Asbestos in Washington

by Administrator 30. September 2009 18:03

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is continuing its testing of asbestos levels at an old W.R. Grace Zonolite factory near Spokane, Washington.  The agency is concerned by levels of the hazardous fiber in the soil of neighborhood yards, and is investigating to see if raking or shoveling the dirt could have caused dangerous levels of the material to be thrown into the air.

The factory has been closed since 1973, when a whistle-blower alerted the government to dangerous levels of asbestos in the plant.  The factory produced Zonolite, an attic insulation material that contained the toxic asbestos, which has been known to cause cancer and other health-related problems.

Historic Cheyney University to Have Asbestos Removed

by Administrator 30. September 2009 13:40

Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Sestak has helped to secure the $300,000 required to remove the asbestos from Cheyney University.  The famous and historically black institution was founded for African Americans pursuing higher education opportunities in the slave era United States, making it the first university of its kind in the nation.  Many of the buildings which require asbestos removal are on the National Register of Historic Places.  The need to remove asbestos from the historic institution serves as a reminder of the amount of asbestos that continues to be exposed to Americans, twenty years after Congress instituted the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule.

Widow of Pipefitter Awarded $1.4M in Mesothelioma Case

by Administrator 29. September 2009 16:38

A Tennessee jury has awarded the wife of a man who died of mesothelioma $1.4 million.  The case alleged that North Brothers had knowingly sold deffective products which exposed the husband to asbestos.  The woman also named several other pipe makers in the suit, although the other firms either settled out of court or were dropped from the charges.  The deceased husband worked as a pipefitter for Combustion Engineering of Chatanooga for 34 years, between 1952 and 1986.  According to the suit, North Brothers had sold asbestos products, which were known to be linked to health problems.  Because they sold these products despite the known health risks, the suit alleges that they were selling defective prodcuts.

Some in Canada Move to Ban Asbestos

by Administrator 28. September 2009 13:58
Despite the fact that asbestos has long been known to cause such diseases as mesothelioma and asbestosis, the Canadian province of Quebec continues to mine asbestos, and Ottawa and Quebec City continue to promote the sale of the substance, according to a September 28, 2009 article published in the Montreal Gazette.  Asbestos is known to be carcinogenic, and the World Health Organization estimates that 90,000 people around the world die of asbestos-related illnesses.

In an effort to decrease the number of asbestos-related deaths, Nathan Cullen, a member of parliament from British Columbia, has introduced a bill which would ban the sale and mining of asbestos.  However, there is much doubt over whether the bill has a chance of passing, given that Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper's government continues to subsidize the industry.

Dumping of Asbestos in Environment

by Administrator 24. September 2009 14:17

The dumping of asbestos into the environment is a serious problem.  When an individual or company decides to pollute the environment by dumping asbestos waste,  they are risking a lot considering the effects of environmental exposure and possible exposure to people. The dumping of asbestos into the environment is very dangerous for a variety of reasons.

Asbestos could damage an environment if improperly dumped.  It could throw the ecosystem out the normal cycle and create serious environmental problems. Another serious danger is the possible exposure to people.  If individuals interact with an area where a large amount of asbestos was dumped,  they may be exposed long enough to develop serious complications.
