Trial Begins for Two Men Charged with Operating Asbestos Removal Scam

The trial of two brothers from Utica, New York charged with running an asbestos removal scam began yesterday.  The brothers are accused of running an illegal asbestos removing company, despite one of the brothers having been previously convicted in 2003 of violating the Clean Air Law and as a result forbidden from being involved in any asbestos removing businesses.  If convicted of this second crime, he can face a maximum of 55 years in prison and a fine of up to $2.5 million.  His brother and co-defendant faces up to 5 years in prison and fines of $250,000.

The severity of these punishments underscore the seriousness of the crime and the dangers related to asbestos exposure.
