Of the 3,000 Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, 150 are treated at the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. One such case is a man who began receiving treatment in December 2007, three short months after he was first diagnosed with cancer. Radiation treatment and participating in a clinical study for Gleevec helped send his cancer into remission by August 2008. He is currently undergoing subsequent chemotherapy after a follow-up appointment found a small growth around his lung.
MD Anderson was founded in 1941 by an act of Texas legislature, and was made one of the nation's first three comprehensive cancer centers through the National Cancer Act of 1971. They expect to treat 90,000 patients in 2009.
