Two medical doctors recently published their new mesothelioma test, which they assert could raise the survival rate for mesothelioma patients and increase the quality of their care by allowing the disease to be detected earlier.  While older tests used X-rays to test for mesothelioma, the new one will you biomarker syrums and a more advanced identification system, which can differentiate between patients who have been exposed to asbestos and have developed mesothelioma, and those who have not. Even more impressive, it may be able to predict the development of the disease before it occurs.

Mesothelioma Tissue Banks Offer Hope

by Administrator 29. October 2009 16:01

Mesothelioma research has long been something of a red-headed stepchild in the field of cancer research.  This is changing, however, as tissue banks and biospecimen resarch databases are opening up across the country to offer researchers access to depositories of specimens.  The databases are part of a larger governmental push to increase cancer resarch and prevent unnecessary deaths.  According to scientists, they will allow for a more complete understanding of the disease, and hopefully move us closer to a cure.

MD Anderson Treats 150 New Mesothelioma Patients a Year

by Administrator 27. October 2009 10:37

Of the 3,000 Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, 150 are treated at the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  One such case is a man who began receiving treatment in December 2007, three short months after he was first diagnosed with cancer.  Radiation treatment and participating in a clinical study for Gleevec helped send his cancer into remission by August 2008.  He is currently undergoing subsequent chemotherapy after a follow-up appointment found a small growth around his lung.

MD Anderson was founded in 1941 by an act of Texas legislature, and was made one of the nation's first three comprehensive cancer centers through the National Cancer Act of 1971.  They expect to treat 90,000 patients in 2009.
