Study: Trimodality Therapy a Success

by Administrator 25. November 2009 14:58

According to a recent study published in the medical journal Lung Cancer, a new treatment for mesothelioma called trimodality therapy is showing promise.  Trimodality therapy is a combination of three different existing techniques, combined to provide a more complete treatment for the disease.

The three procedures in trimodality treatment are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment.  A study of 35 patients found that this treatment offered promising results; although the sample size is still quite small, the results merit increased research.

Organization Calls for Ban on Asbestos

by Administrator 23. November 2009 16:45

The American Public Health Association (AMPA), the oldest organization of healthcare professionals in the United States, is advocating a full ban on the sale, use, import, and export of asbestos, the substance long known to cause the particularly deadly and virulent cancer mesothelioma.  This ban would extend to any products containing asbestos.

The AMPA notes the severe dangers of mesothelioma, including the one-year life expectancy upon diagnosis, and the fact that the disease can take decades to manifest itself after exposure to an asbestos product.  Asbestos has been subject to many restrictions since the 1970s, but there is still no out-right ban on the substance.

Virus Treatment for Mesothelioma Promising

by Administrator 23. November 2009 16:20

A new form of cancer treatment in which viruses attack specifically cancerous cells is offering hope to mesothelioma patients.  Unlike current treatments, such as chemotherapy, this form of treatment would spare healthy cells and target only the cancer.  The treatment could be even more effective if the virus were able to express interferon-beta, the antiviral protein.

Researchers Find New Mesothelioma Marker

by Administrator 19. November 2009 16:48

Researchers in Turkey have found a new biological marker which will allow for better diagnosis of mesothelioma.  The marker is called D2-40, and is already in use in other medical capacities.  The researchers believe that it will help doctors distinguish between malignant mesothelioma and pulmonary adenocarcinomas.

Under the microscope, malignant mesothelioma, benign mesothelioma, and pulmonary adenocarcinomas are difficult to distinguish from one another.  The D2-40 marker should make it easier for people in the lab to identify and combat mesothelioma by catching it more effectively.
