by Administrator 23. December 2009 13:33

According to research compiled by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the number of deaths due to malignant mesothelioma continues to increase.  Although the use of asbestos was curtailed in the late 1970s, approximately 1.3 million workers are still exposed to asbestos dust.

Gene Maps on Cancer Allows Scientists New View on Cancer

by Administrator 17. December 2009 14:52

Scientists have recently created the first entire cancer gene maps.   These maps identify the changes that a cell goes through before it becomes cancer.  Many scientists and researchers believe that this is a defining moment in cancer research and opens the possibility of understanding cancer a lot better.

The gene map that were created were for melanoma skin cancer and lung cancer.  The maps sequenced DNA from the cancer tissue, and the results documented over 20,000 mutations for each form of cancer.  Plans are already in the works to gene map out over 50 more forms of cancer in the coming months.  Many believe that the data yielded from these maps could be utilized to bring the scientific and medical community one step closer to curing cancer.
