Daytona Beach Pier recieves asbestos abatement and upgrades

An 85-year-old Daytona Beach Pier will recieve upgrades to revitalize area, but plans to open were delayed after finding asbestos fibers.

The pier was scheduled to be opened last month but was delayed due to the discovery of asbestos. The asbestos has now been removed to make sure that the pier is safe and will not be harmful for people visiting the area. Inhaling asbestos fibers is related to many health hazards, including Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that can lie dormant for years before it is discovered.

City officials say that fishing may no longer be allowed at the pier
because they plan to build restaurants, bars and other businesses and
think that fishing will not mix with the new atmosphere
