The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working to stabilize three stream-banks in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to protect nearby residents from potential asbestos exposure from the nearby BoRit asbestos site. Crews have been working on this project since 2009, and they are about to begin the third phase, which is intended to modify the reservoir berms near Wissahockson creek and Tannery Run creek, and is predicted to be finished by the middle of June. It has also been noted by site coordinators that an asbestos waste pile located near Tannery Run creek will have to be relocated.
The asbestos abatement project is a long and complicated process, but it is necessary for the protection of Montgomery County citizens. Exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is made even more dangerous by the fact that it has a long latency period and is, therefore, extremely difficult to diagnose. Mesothelioma kills the majority of its victims within two years.
