Community attempts to protect itself from asbestos

Posted on June 11th, 2010 No Comments

Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, destroys many of the body's internal cavities and is difficult to diagnose due to the initially dormant nature of the disease.  It is, therefore, extremely important that residents be made aware of every potential asbestos concentration in the community.  This is why Bay Area, California residents are taking extreme precautions against some known airborne asbestos particles in their area.  When workers at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard were found to have kicked up serpentine soil which contains asbestos fibers, the company behind the incident, Lennar Corp. was fined over half a million dollars for their failure to keep the asbestos dust under control.

Since they received this fine, companies in the area have been taking every precaution to contain airborne asbestos fibers so that they are not exposed to the community at large.  However, despite efforts to protect Bayview residents from the particles, many of them have been unknowingly exposed for quite some time.
