House Representative Betty McCollum and Senator Patty Murray have created a bill to recognize mesothelioma through a national awareness day. The bill is currently being reviewed by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and is sponsored by the Mesothelioma Research Foundation.
If approved, National Mesothelioma Awareness Day will take place on September 26th. According to Mesothelioma Research Foundation officials, a presentation will be made on the "Today" show and displays will cover the Rockefeller building to gain recognition of the disease.
Worldwide, 90,000 people lose their lives to mesothelioma a year. In the United States alone, 2,500 are killed by the cancer every year.
