Asbestos manufacturing companies going bankrupt

by Administrator 10. June 2010 17:05

Three asbestos manufacturing corporations have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the past month in an effort to halt a rising number of accumulating mesothelioma lawsuits.  Many of the suits filed against Garlock Sealing Technologies, Bondex International, and Specialty Products Holding Corporation could result in multi-million dollar awards.  The companies are setting up funds specifically for handling these legal cases.  Bondex, who has been facing these kinds of lawsuits for over 20 years, had set aside $190 million to address all asbestos claims.  However, this proved to be insufficient and they now have set aside another $288 million to handle more claims.

Verdict payouts to those suffering from asbestos exposure are often in the millions because of the intense suffering caused by asbestos-related diseases.  For this reason, the trend of asbestos manufacturing companies filing for bankruptcy may continue to increase as more and more people are diagnosed with mesothelioma and other harmful asbestos-related ailments.

Florida renovation project halted for asbestos removal

by Administrator 18. May 2010 16:15

A construction project in Lee County, Florida must be halted in order to remove dirt and pilings that contain asbestos from the area. The project was supposed to be finished by the end of May, but now will be pushed back.

On May 18, workers will be removing the toxins from the area. They will wear protective gear including coveralls, masks, gloves and air monitors in order to ensure their safety when dealing with the material. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause for mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive lung cancer that can remain dormant for years.

An official from the Department of Environmental Protection said that the construction company could face a heavy fine if asbestos is found in over 35 feet of land. Workers will be keeping the land wet to prevent fibers from being airborne.

Two contractors charged with asbestos violations

by Administrator 12. May 2010 15:15

Two contractors based near Buffalo, New York were charged with asbestos-related felony charges after disposing of asbestos, a know carcinogen, improperly.

The two men allegedly disposed five tons of asbestos debris in an abandoned warehouse in Buffalo. The site has now been cleaned, but the removal of the asbestos cost nearly $137,000. If the two men are found guilty they will face up to seven years in prison.

When asbestos particles are improperly disposed of, the particles can become airborne. Once the toxic materials are airborne, they can be inhaled and lodge themselves into the lung which can lead to lung cancer or other asbestos-related diseases. The state's Attoney General said that his office has no tolerance for people who cut corners when dumping harmful materials that can put the public in danger.

Study to be done on mesothelioma risk and firefighters

by Administrator 7. May 2010 14:14

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health along with the U.S. Fire Administration will conduct a study on current and retired firefighters to determine if their is a risk of firefighters being exposed to asbestos on the job.

The study will include veiwing health records of 18,000 firefighters and will examine if their is a correlation between cancers, such as mesothelioma, and exposure to toxins on the job. Asbestos can be used in many building materials such as drywall, insulation, floor tiles and more. Asbestos, if disturbed or burned, the fibers can be released into the air. If these fibers are inhaled these fibers have been shown to lodge deep within in the lung which may lead to mesothelioma years later.

Firefighters wear protective gear while fighting fires which is usually enough to protect them from asbestos and other toxins, but if the gear is removed, the firefighter can be left unprotected to the toxins.
