Study to be done on mesothelioma risk and firefighters

by Administrator 7. May 2010 14:14

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health along with the U.S. Fire Administration will conduct a study on current and retired firefighters to determine if their is a risk of firefighters being exposed to asbestos on the job.

The study will include veiwing health records of 18,000 firefighters and will examine if their is a correlation between cancers, such as mesothelioma, and exposure to toxins on the job. Asbestos can be used in many building materials such as drywall, insulation, floor tiles and more. Asbestos, if disturbed or burned, the fibers can be released into the air. If these fibers are inhaled these fibers have been shown to lodge deep within in the lung which may lead to mesothelioma years later.

Firefighters wear protective gear while fighting fires which is usually enough to protect them from asbestos and other toxins, but if the gear is removed, the firefighter can be left unprotected to the toxins.

Illnois Tries to Approve Asbestos Removal Plan

by Administrator 10. February 2010 19:24

If the city approves the demolition of the Quebecor World building and a road project, an asbestos removal project will be done aswell.

The demolition can be done if a 5,225 square foot of asbestos is removed. The asbestos is used in the floor adhesive under an office. Once a licensed Illinois asbestos agent has cleared the site the project can begin. Exposure to asbestos has been directly linked to mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive form of cancer. For decades, asbestos was used as a fire resistant material until the health risks were known.

Mesothelioma Cases Still on the Rise

by Administrator 23. December 2009 13:33

Despite the increased awareness of the danger of asbestos and mesothelioma over the past two decades, the number of cases of the virulent form of cancer is still on the rise.  The number of mortalities due to mesothelioma has increased over the past decade, and there is no reason to believe that this trend will reverse.

According to research compiled by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the number of deaths due to malignant mesothelioma continues to increase.  Although the use of asbestos was curtailed in the late 1970s, approximately 1.3 million workers are still exposed to asbestos dust.

New Mesothelioma Treatment Emerges from Australia

by Administrator 1. December 2009 16:48

A new treatment for mesothelioma cancer has been developed in Australia, and is believed to improve life expectency for those suffering from the virulent form cancer by two years.  The current life expectancy for someone diagnosed with mesothelioma is 18 months.

The new form of treatment involves surgery, followed by heavy doses of radiotherapy, in which radiation is used to kill the cancerous cells.  The new technique was developed by a team of researchers in Australia, led by a radiation oncologist at the Austin Health Centre in Victoria.

Study: Trimodality Therapy a Success

by Administrator 25. November 2009 14:58

According to a recent study published in the medical journal Lung Cancer, a new treatment for mesothelioma called trimodality therapy is showing promise.  Trimodality therapy is a combination of three different existing techniques, combined to provide a more complete treatment for the disease.

The three procedures in trimodality treatment are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment.  A study of 35 patients found that this treatment offered promising results; although the sample size is still quite small, the results merit increased research.
