Florida renovation project halted for asbestos removal

by Administrator 18. May 2010 16:15

A construction project in Lee County, Florida must be halted in order to remove dirt and pilings that contain asbestos from the area. The project was supposed to be finished by the end of May, but now will be pushed back.

On May 18, workers will be removing the toxins from the area. They will wear protective gear including coveralls, masks, gloves and air monitors in order to ensure their safety when dealing with the material. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause for mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive lung cancer that can remain dormant for years.

An official from the Department of Environmental Protection said that the construction company could face a heavy fine if asbestos is found in over 35 feet of land. Workers will be keeping the land wet to prevent fibers from being airborne.

by Administrator 26. April 2010 17:50

After classes were cancelled last Monday in repsonse to an asbestos scare, a New York school has checked the air for asbestos and has been cleared.

Classes were cancelled after a 100-foot section of a wall in the auditorium broke off leaving people worried that asbestos had become airborne in the collapse. Classes were cancelled to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff. The entire area was closed off for testing and engineers say that the building is structually sound and all air quality tests have shown that asbestos is not present.

Now that teachers, staff and students have returned to school some have voiced their concern that they still have a fear that asbestos is present in the buidling. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer.

Mesothelioma suit settles for $2 million

by Administrator 26. March 2010 15:22

A Brooklyn construction worker's family has been awarded $2 million in a mesothelioma lawsuit.

The worker was in the construction business for over 40 years and was regulary exposed to asbestos during his career. He did constrution work at places such as the World Trade Center and two international airports. Buildings that have used asbestos materials in the past can be dangerous in construction areas because asbestos becomes dangerous when it is airborne. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer such as mesothelioma but can be prevented if the right protective gear is worn.
