Asbestos found in Pennsylvania high school

by Administrator 10. March 2010 18:07

In February, a high school in Pennsylvania found over 60,000 square feet of asbestos filled tiles.

The substitute superintendent has said that he doesn't think that the school will be closed for an entire year while removing the asbestos. The goal is to tightly control the removal process so that people who are in seperate areas of the building will not be put in a harmful situation. Investogators have said that the school also has toxic glue holding the carpets down so the process will involve more than just the asbestos removal. They are considering moving the students to another school for one year, but a formal decision has not yet been made.

Plumbers may be at risk of developing mesothelioma

by Administrator 3. March 2010 15:27

Insulation that is used to protect water pipes in thousands of homes and comercial properties can be very dangerous for plumbers when they are fixing or repairing the pipes.

Mineral asbestos was a popular substance to use in making insulation for pipes because of its stong resistance to corrosion and temperature extremes. Eventally, however, the public learned about the dangers of asbestos exposure, which has not been used in insulation since the 1980's. Plumbers are in a dangerous situation when fixing pipes because their work usually causes the pipe to be bent or cut. This then disturbs the asbestos, and the mineral can then be airborne and inhaled. Before the dangers of asbestos were known many plumbers would work in small, cramped spaces and did not have adequate protective gear. Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, and other asbestos-related diseases are primarily caused from inhaling airborne particles.
