Two arrested for dumping asbestos materials in Illinois park

by Administrator 6. July 2010 16:56

Two Illinois businessmen were arrested and indicted for illegally dumping toxic asbestos materials in an open field in Hopkins Park, Illinois.  The men are charged with illegally disposing of 127 bags of the extremely hazardous material that was removed from buildings that were being renovated. The real estate developer is facing charges of hiring a company that was not trained in the proper removal or disposal of asbestos. The company failed to notify the Environmental Protection Agency about the asbestos removal, did not adequately warn residents of the hazardous waste removal, and failed to dispose of the material in a properly designated area.

Couple claims man contracted cancer from work with 46 companies

by Administrator 1. June 2010 20:17

An Orange County man and woman have filed lawsuits against 46 different corporations, claiming the lung cancer with which the man was diagnosed in 2009, was wrongfully caused.  Doug and Brenda York claim that Doug York was diagnosed with the disease in December.  The Yorks say Doug worked as a pipefitter for various companies between the years of 1972 and 1985.  These companies include Mobil, Olin, Texaco, Fina, Jefferson Chemical, Houston Chemical, Union 76 and Gulf Oil Corp.

The Yorks claim that Doug's cancer was caused after he was exposed to asbestos fibers at these companies. York claims that he did not know of the hazards of asbestos exposure at the time.  The Yorks state that the defendants failed to adequately warn Doug of the serious health hazards associated with asbestos exposure and failed to provide him with what would be considered adequate and safe working apparel.  The Yorks are also accusing the defendants of negligently failing to test their products before they were released into the stream of commerce and failing to recall materials containing asbestos.

Brenda York claims to have lost Doug York's care, maintenance, services, support, advice, counsel and consortium as a result of his asbestos exposure.  She also claims to have suffered mental anguish.

Woman files suit against 65 companies for asbestos-related death

by Administrator 27. May 2010 16:55
A West Virginia woman filed a mesothelioma suit this week naming 65 companies as responsible for the death of her brother.

The suit alleges that the woman's brother’s death was caused by working with asbestos-laden products that were made or used by the defendant companies. Her brother was diagnosed with mesothelioma on February 22 and died on March 5. He was an Amco Steel worker from 1965 to 1986.

Mesothelioma is primarly caused by exposure to asbestos. The rare and aggressive form of cancer can lay dormant for half a century before it manifests. The cancer takes over 3,000 American lives per year.

Decades-old problems persist for town plagued by asbestos

by Administrator 24. May 2010 18:56

For the residents of Libby, Montana, the effects of asbestos exposure can be seen in the health-related issues that have plagued many of the townspeople. Libby was once home to the W.R. Grace coal mine, and since the 1980's, nearly 400 people in the town have died due to asbestos-related illness. This included mine workers, their families, and locals who were exposed to the tiny asbestos fibers that often contribute to mesothelioma and other devastating diseases.

Despite lasting efforts by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the clean-up process has been a long and expensive one, lasting more than ten years and costing over $300 million dollars. The hospital continues see 15-20 new cases of asbestos-related illnesses each month and because such diseases can emerge decades later, the trend is expected to continue for another decade.

Asbestos exposure can lead to debilitating diseases like mesothelioma and other very serious health problems. If you or someone you love has developed mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, contact the mesothelioma lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955 today.
