Texas family sues in second-hand mesothelima case

by Administrator 15. June 2010 18:53

A Texas family has filed a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell, claiming that a family member who washed the clothes of some of the men who worked for these companies contracted and died from mesothelioma.  This second-hand asbestos exposure lawsuit alleges that these companies did not warn their employees of the dangers associated with working in plants where they might be exposed to asbestos.  Recently, there have been a high amount of second-hand exposure asbestos lawsuits filed by those who have not been directly exposed to toxic asbestos fibers.  Those most affected by second-hand exposure to asbestos are wives who wash clothes that have been exposed to asbestos and children whose fathers' hold them after returning home from work where they are exposed.

Mesothelioma lawsuits have continued to rise in recent years due to mesothelioma's latency period.  This number is expected to peak in 2010.  The first asbestos case was filed in 1929, and since then there have been over 600,000 similar lawsuits filed in the United States.

Asbestos manufacturing companies going bankrupt

by Administrator 10. June 2010 17:05

Three asbestos manufacturing corporations have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the past month in an effort to halt a rising number of accumulating mesothelioma lawsuits.  Many of the suits filed against Garlock Sealing Technologies, Bondex International, and Specialty Products Holding Corporation could result in multi-million dollar awards.  The companies are setting up funds specifically for handling these legal cases.  Bondex, who has been facing these kinds of lawsuits for over 20 years, had set aside $190 million to address all asbestos claims.  However, this proved to be insufficient and they now have set aside another $288 million to handle more claims.

Verdict payouts to those suffering from asbestos exposure are often in the millions because of the intense suffering caused by asbestos-related diseases.  For this reason, the trend of asbestos manufacturing companies filing for bankruptcy may continue to increase as more and more people are diagnosed with mesothelioma and other harmful asbestos-related ailments.

Asbestos present at Parade of Homes site

by Administrator 16. April 2010 17:34

Asbestos has been found in a soil sample from the Buckroe's Parade of Homes site.

An analysis was carried out by the Marine Chemist Serive Inc. in late March and they found asbestos in 30 percent of the soil sample they looked at. The land previously housed Todd's Cottages before it was sold to the new developer. Concerns have been raised by the buyers of the development about whether or not an environmental study was done on the land before it was sold.

Asbestos material can be dangerous when inhaled. Once inhaled, the fibers can lodge into your lungs and can cause lung cancer such as Mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Asbestos exposure one of many problems plaguing ground zero workers

by Administrator 9. April 2010 12:54

New York City is being sued by hundreds of people for cancer diagnoses they received following time spent working in the ground zero area. A $575 million settlement was rejected by a judge two weeks ago in part because he did not believe that the settlement would adequately cover the costs of sick workers' medical costs.

Statistics show that the rate of cancer diagnoses for workers is in line with that of the general public, making it difficult to determine how much money should be awarded to sick workers. Scientists have no doubt that many sick workers' diagnoses have ties to ground zero, but determining which is complex.

According to Dr. Philip Landrigan, who oversees the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, "'We know full well that there were carcinogens at ground zero. There was asbestos. There was benzene. There were other things." Complicating the financial package is whether or not patients with diseases more likely to be a result of ground zero interaction, such as respiratory illnesses, should receive more payment than those with more difficult to prove illnesses.

Landrigan says that he and other researchers have great concern that large cancer clusters amongst ground zero workers will continue to emerge as more years pass. Mexico: Increased Usage of Asbestos

by Administrator 8. February 2010 17:45

In Mexico, the increased usage of asbestos in industrial projects are leading to more cases of mesothelioma, a rare form cancer.

Researchers are urging that industrial companies stop using asbestos so that there will not be a huge breakout of asbestos-related diseases. Occupational health researchers in Mexico are looking into the issue and dound that a general lack of recognition on the dangers of the asbestos exposure is contributing to the problem. In Mexixo they use chrysotile asbestos, which is the most commonly used and most harmful to workers.
