In Rochester, New York, asbestos removal is taking place at the site of the Midtown plaza.

The material must be removed from the site according to state and federal laws because asbestos is a known carcinogen that is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare lung cancer. City officials say that the project will cost a total of $90 million, which was more than expected and city officials still need to procure the rest of the funds.

Community center renovation includes asbestos removal

by Administrator 3. May 2010 17:18

A community center in Rhode Island will receive a long-awaited renovation to the center's first floor after asbestos removal has been done.

Earlier this year, the town council approved a $118,000 to hire a company to remove the asbestos particles from the floor tiles before the renovation can begin. This money will also address handicap accessibility  and fire code upgrades for the building. When airborne, asbestos particles are hazardous for workers and for people nearby beacause exposure to these particles have been associated with causing diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

After the asbestos removal, the renovation will begin to make more meeting space for civic groups and other community activities. According to an official, the renovation has been on and off the agenda for nearly 15 years.

New York school reopens after asbestos scare

by Administrator 26. April 2010 17:50

After classes were cancelled last Monday in repsonse to an asbestos scare, a New York school has checked the air for asbestos and has been cleared.

Classes were cancelled after a 100-foot section of a wall in the auditorium broke off leaving people worried that asbestos had become airborne in the collapse. Classes were cancelled to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff. The entire area was closed off for testing and engineers say that the building is structually sound and all air quality tests have shown that asbestos is not present.

Now that teachers, staff and students have returned to school some have voiced their concern that they still have a fear that asbestos is present in the buidling. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer.
