Rhode Island beach bathhouse to remove asbestos

by Administrator 9. July 2010 14:42

Officials recently found asbestos in the roof panels in the changing room of the North Pavilion bathhouse in Narragansett, Rhode Island at Town Beach.  The pavilion is to be closed for maintenance while Vortex, Inc. handles the removal of all asbestos from the bathhouse.  Officials from the Providence Journal stated that Vortex will need to "power-wash the roof edges and cover the loose asbestos with an epoxy coating, to prevent it from crumbling or becoming airborne" in order to safely remove the asbestos.

The bathhouse was constructed over fifty years ago, before the risks associated with asbestos exposure were known.  Asbestos exposure often causes lung cancer or mesothelioma.  Narragansett is now trying to remove all asbestos from its establishments, a process which will take a couple of years at least.

Woman files suit against 65 companies for asbestos-related death

by Administrator 27. May 2010 16:55
A West Virginia woman filed a mesothelioma suit this week naming 65 companies as responsible for the death of her brother.

The suit alleges that the woman's brother’s death was caused by working with asbestos-laden products that were made or used by the defendant companies. Her brother was diagnosed with mesothelioma on February 22 and died on March 5. He was an Amco Steel worker from 1965 to 1986.

Mesothelioma is primarly caused by exposure to asbestos. The rare and aggressive form of cancer can lay dormant for half a century before it manifests. The cancer takes over 3,000 American lives per year.

Florida jury awards man $14 million

A Florida man has been awarded $14 million in a mesothelioma suit.

According to court documents, the man was exposed to asbestos during the 1970s when he worked at his family's construction company. At the time, asbestos was used in joint compounds in the construction industry.

Union Carbide, a chemical manufacturing company, was found to be negligent by the jury for selling materials containing asbestos fibers. The selling of these materials continued until 1985.

Florida renovation project halted for asbestos removal

by Administrator 18. May 2010 16:15

A construction project in Lee County, Florida must be halted in order to remove dirt and pilings that contain asbestos from the area. The project was supposed to be finished by the end of May, but now will be pushed back.

On May 18, workers will be removing the toxins from the area. They will wear protective gear including coveralls, masks, gloves and air monitors in order to ensure their safety when dealing with the material. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause for mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive lung cancer that can remain dormant for years.

An official from the Department of Environmental Protection said that the construction company could face a heavy fine if asbestos is found in over 35 feet of land. Workers will be keeping the land wet to prevent fibers from being airborne.

Two contractors charged with asbestos violations

by Administrator 12. May 2010 15:15

Two contractors based near Buffalo, New York were charged with asbestos-related felony charges after disposing of asbestos, a know carcinogen, improperly.

The two men allegedly disposed five tons of asbestos debris in an abandoned warehouse in Buffalo. The site has now been cleaned, but the removal of the asbestos cost nearly $137,000. If the two men are found guilty they will face up to seven years in prison.

When asbestos particles are improperly disposed of, the particles can become airborne. Once the toxic materials are airborne, they can be inhaled and lodge themselves into the lung which can lead to lung cancer or other asbestos-related diseases. The state's Attoney General said that his office has no tolerance for people who cut corners when dumping harmful materials that can put the public in danger.
