Spokane, Washington was once the site of a WR Grace insulation factory. In that factory, the company produced dangerous asbestos insulation. In the wake of Libby, Montana's status as a health emergency site, the US Environmental Protection Agency is checking into the possibility of asbestos contamination in other WR Grace sites.

The EPA is now conducting soil samples at nine homes near the former site of WR Grace's factory. If those samples come back positive for asbestos, it could lead to further soil testing and some air tests as well. The EPA wants to be absolutely sure that the people of Spokane have not been injured by decades old asbestos.

Brothers Arthur and Shaun Amaral have been indicted by a Massachusetts grand jury on charges of failure to file notice of asbestos abatement, knowingly demolishing buildings with asbestos, failing to adhere to safety procedures and disposing of asbestos in an unsafe manner and in an unauthorized location.

The older of the two brothers owns Northeast Demolition and Removal which has completed several demolition projects that included asbestos material abatement. They had workers perform the projects without proper protection, then stored the asbestos materials in drums and placed them in a storage facility. The brothers now face a year in jail and a $25,000 for each of the five charges against them.

Broadmeadow Elementary School in Rantoul, Illinois has had to send its summer school students home early on some days because of the heat. The school does not have air conditioning, which makes it dangerous to hold classes at certain temperatures. However, the school is due to have air conditioning installed in the near future.

Champaign County has approved a new sales tax that will allow the school district to spend $12.5 million to $13.5 million on renovation projects. In addition to Broadmeadow, three other elementary schools and a junior high school will also receive air conditioning. However, they must first undergo asbestos abatement. In Australia, a court has ruled in favor of Ford Motor Company in an asbestos case. The victim in the case was exposed to asbestos while working for Ford in the 1970s and 1980s. In April, the man passed away from a disease related to that asbestos exposure. For this, his family was awarded $840,000 in damages. However, the court has ruled differently.

In accordance with the court's ruling, Ford will only have to pay between 50% and 65% of the awarded damages to the family. While this is still a win for the family, it means that the Ford Motor Company was only liable for approximately half of the asbestos exposure that injured and eventually killed the worker in question.
