Connecticut to spend $2.3 million to clean up asbestos

by Administrator 5. August 2010 15:30

The state of Connecticut has approved $2.3 million dollars to remove asbestos from its Brownfield sites.  The money is being distributed between six Connecticut municipalities for both commercial and residential sites.  Funds are being given by the Municipal Brownfield Pilot Program established in 2006.  Authorities believe that cleaning these sites will not only protect Connecticut residents but also provide for more housing, commercial, and recreational development.

Hartford, Madison, Meriden, Naugatuck, Putnam, and Waterbury are the municipalities that will receive state funding.  The majority of asbestos cleanup will be in Madison.  Old buildings like the Brownfield sites require asbestos removal before they can be demolished or renovated.

Beaumont firefighter with mesothelioma returns to work

by Administrator 13. July 2010 15:47

David Chesser, a firefighter from Beaumont, Texas, recently returned to work after suffering from mesothelioma for the past fourteen months.

Unfortunately, firefighters are often exposed to mesothelioma-causing airborne asbestos particles on the job.  Also, while treatments like surgery or chemotherapy can help mesothelioma, mesothelioma does not have a cure.

While fighting mesothelioma, Chesser was promoted to district fire chief but was unable to be there, so his wife stood in for him.  Now, after fourteen months of treatment Chesser returned to the job he loves and stated, "I wanted to be back with these guys.  I didn't want the cancer to make me quit my job".

Two arrested for dumping asbestos materials in Illinois park

by Administrator 6. July 2010 16:56

Two Illinois businessmen were arrested and indicted for illegally dumping toxic asbestos materials in an open field in Hopkins Park, Illinois.  The men are charged with illegally disposing of 127 bags of the extremely hazardous material that was removed from buildings that were being renovated. The real estate developer is facing charges of hiring a company that was not trained in the proper removal or disposal of asbestos. The company failed to notify the Environmental Protection Agency about the asbestos removal, did not adequately warn residents of the hazardous waste removal, and failed to dispose of the material in a properly designated area.

Exposure to asbestos can have devastating effects on your life, health, and well-being. If you have developed mesothelioma or other health problems as a result of being exposed to asbestos, contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955 to discuss your legal options.

Youngest mesothelioma patient ever receives 2 benefits

by Administrator 17. June 2010 18:36

The youngest patient ever diagnosed with Mesothelioma had two different benefits thrown for him.  There was a bike run on Saturday, June 5 in Taylor Falls with raffles, a silent auction, a hog roast and musical entertainment.  The next day there was a benefit picnic thrown in the 12-year-old boy's honor.  Food served at the picnic included hot dogs, burgers, salads, desserts and beverages.  There were also carnival games and live entertainment was provided by several different groups.  The seventh grader received his surprising diagnosis in March of 2010.  Only three children have ever been diagnosed with mesothelioma since it is a disease that generally lays dormant for a while after exposure to asbestos. It ususally takes about 10 to 20 years to show up in adult lungs.

However, the tumors from the 12-year-old's disease were found in his abdomen, not his lungs.   The boys parents noticed that he seemed to be losing weight.  He also appeared to be tired all the time and suffered from headaches and nausea very often.  The child underwent a 13-hour long invasive surgery last month but doctor's predict that his disease will be a lifelong battle.

Ohio family loses asbestos lawsuit

by Administrator 11. June 2010 20:07
An Ohio family lost their case in an asbestos lawsuit after losing wife Mary Adams to a lung disease caued by exposure to asbestos. Adams died of complications related to the disease in 2007.  The family claimed that since Adams' husband worked at a Goodyear plant, he would transport asbestos particles from work to home every day.  The family believes that Mary was exposed to these particles when she was doing her husband's laundry.  Contracting diseases as a result of secondhand exposure to asbesos is fairly common.  No matter how you are exposed to asbestos, you are in danger of developing a number of lung diseases, including mesothelioma.

The court upheld a tort reform that protects corportations from lawsuits regarding asbestos exposure when the exposure occurred outside of the physical workplace.  The family's attoney plans to ask state lawmakers to reconsider this 2005 reform.
