Mass. Woman Accused of Asbestos Crimes Disappears

by Administrator 28. May 2009 19:31

A North Andover, Massachusetts woman named Albania Deleon has disappeared after being convicted of 28 felonies related to asbestos crimes. Deleon ran Environmental Compliance Training (ECT), a New England asbestos training school. The school was designed to teach professionals the proper way to handle asbestos during construction or abatement projects, but instead of teaching anyone anything, she was simply selling certificates that stated that they were qualified to handle asbestos removal jobs. For $400, Deleon sold certificates that allowed her "students" to get jobs removing asbestos, despite their lack of any training whatsoever.

It is estimated that more than 2,500 people (many illegal immigrants) managed to obtain these fraudulent certificates, putting thousands of people at risk of asbestos exposure as a result. Deleon was convicted of the 28 felonies last November and had been wearing an ankle monitor as she awaited sentencing. The 39 year old mother abandoned her 3 year old child back in March when she sawed off her ankle monitor and disappeared. She has yet to be located.

Her actions may have caused thousands of people to be wrongly exposed to asbestos. If you have been exposed to asbestos and have developed mesothelioma, contact the mesothelioma lawyers of Williams Kherkher to learn more about your legal options. Call 800-781-3955.

Minnesota Miners Developing Mesothelioma at Alarming Rate

by Administrator 19. July 2008 01:07
An investigation has recently begun to explain why men from a region of northeastern Minnesota are developing mesothelioma at an alarming rate which is twice the national average. The University of Minnesota is leading the investigation through the School of Public Health.  The university seeks to understand the reasons behind the recent deaths of many taconite miners due to the rapid development of mesothelioma. Scientists are working to investigate the dangers of taconite, as well as the contents of the air that the miners inhale on a daily basis. Mesothelioma is commonly linked to asbestos exposure, however, nothing has proven the existence of asbestos in the taconite or the air that they miners breathe in recent studies. Researchers and scientists will continue to examine the working conditions of these miners until an explanation is revealed. For more information about mesothelioma, contact the mesothelioma lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 866-950-9000.

Environmental Group Questions Asbestos Test Results at Oak Street Beach

by Administrator 11. March 2008 16:03
In 2004, University of Illinois at Chicago scientist discovered unsafe levels of amphibole asbestos in samples taken from Oak Street Beach, and alerted the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Chicago Park District. Tests run the following year by contractor Levine Fricke, however, registered only minimal asbestos levels, and the beach was declared safe. Now, years later, the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society, an environmental watchdog group, is demanding that the Chicago Park District retest Oak Street Beach for asbestos, alleging that the 2005 tests were faulty in their assessment. The Society claims that air filters used by Levine Fricke during testing were too large to efficiently trap asbestos fibers, leading to an artificially low result. It also questions the background of Levine Fricke, which was a consultant to a manufacturing company linked with asbestos pollution in Lake Michigan. The Chicago Park District denies that larger air filters would have any significant impact on results, and defends Levine Fricke's track record. Despite these assurances, however, the EPA Superfund chief in Chicago has asked for a review of the 2005 test results. Have you suffered health problems because of asbestos exposure? If so, you may want to consider taking legal action. For more information about your options, call a mesothelioma lawyer from Williams Kherkher at 866-950-9000 today.

Woman with Mesothelioma Sues DuPont, Asbestos Manufacturers

by Administrator 10. March 2008 18:03
A woman diagnosed with mesothelioma, an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure, has filed suit against her husband's former employer DuPont, and asbestos manufacturers Union Carbide, Ingersoll-Rand, Guard-Line, and others. Frances Barras, of Nederland, TX, claims in her suit that she developed mesothelioma as a result of years of washing her husband's contaminated work clothes. She accuses DuPont of failing to implement simple safety precautions which would have prevented her exposure. The suit also holds that the asbestos manufacturing companies failed to adequately warn Mr. Barras about the dangers of asbestos. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, you may want to consider legal action against those responsible for your pain. Call 866-950-9000 and speak with a mesothelioma lawyer at Williams Kherkher to learn more.

Firefighters Exposed to Asbestos during Training

by Administrator 11. January 2008 17:01

According to the state's Department of Labor and Industries, the firefighters were exposed to asbestos and other toxic materials when the cut holes through the walls and the ceilings of old buildings during routine training exercises. Because the buildings were older, the state looked into the practice and found asbestos fibers in the buildings. Currently, the state is recommending lots of health checks for these firefights. A representative for the firefighters' union said that the firefighters involved would most likely file claims against the state.
