EPA: Restrictions made on use of heavy equipment in asbestos removal

Posted on March 13th, 2012 No Comments

Regulators with the Department of Energy have stated that the use of heavy machinery when removing asbestos-containing materials has been restricted during demolition projects out of the concern of those working.

The agreement was recently signed after the inspector general for the Environmental Protection Agency stated that the removal of asbestos at a Hanford building may have put workers at risk.

Asbestos used to be removed by hand, but sometimes heavy machinery is used to remove the paneling from buildings. This was always thought to be a safe way, but it has now been seen that the asbestos fibers  may crumble, which makes the fine enough to be inhaled.

If asbestos particles lodge into the lung, it can later form into an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma. If this has happened to you or a loved one, contact the asbestos exposure lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-781-3955.

Posted on February 27th, 2012 No Comments

The state of Montana has now been sued by a Nebraska insurance company claiming that they are owed $16 million in order to cover asbestos lawsuit claims that came from residents in the town of Libby.

Most of the money went to an asbestos settlement filed by over a thousand residents of the town who claimed they developed asbestos-related diseases from working in a vermiculite mine in the town.

The insurer, National Idemnity Co., said that they are owed money from the state of Montana from payments that fell out of the company’s state insurance policy.

The claimants in this case said that the state knew that there was asbestos in the dust particles that could sicken the workers, but did not do anything about it. The payments are not to be taken from the claimants, but from the state.
