Broadmeadow Elementary School in Rantoul, Illinois has had to send its summer school students home early on some days because of the heat. The school does not have air conditioning, which makes it dangerous to hold classes at certain temperatures. However, the school is due to have air conditioning installed in the near future.
Champaign County has approved a new sales tax that will allow the school district to spend $12.5 million to $13.5 million on renovation projects. In addition to Broadmeadow, three other elementary schools and a junior high school will also receive air conditioning. However, they must first undergo asbestos abatement. The removal of asbestos will keep the students and staff at the schools safer.
