In Iron Range, Minnesota, 58 residents have been killed by the rare cancer mesothelioma. Because of that and the way the government has handled the problem in the past, there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the deaths and the disease. Recently, however, the state has requested a $4.9 million study to be carried out by the University of Minnesota.
The researchers undertaking the study are attempting to determine whether or not there is a relationship between taconite dust and mesothelioma. If there is a relationship, they will also attempt to determine what that might be. The study hopes to examine 1,200 taconite workers and 800 spouses of those workers.
