The Avondale shipyard is located on the Mississippi River in Avondale, Louisiana, and covers nearly 229 acres of space. Featuring 6,500 feet of wharves, 2,900 feet of waterfront land, and 1,200 feet of launch ways, the Avondale shipyard employs over 5,500 people.

The shipyard specializes in construction, conversion, repair, and design. Created in 1938, Avondale Industries, Inc. has grown into one of the largest shipbuilders in the United States after building their first vessels in the 1950s. During the 1980s, Avondale constructed both military and commercial ships, including 27 destroyer escorts for the US Navy. Having successfully applied modular construction techniques to all of their vessels, Avondale became an authority on modern shipbuilding.

In 1997, Avondale Industries, Inc., received the largest commercial contract in history to produce 125,000 Dead Weight Tons crude oil carriers.
