Asbestos in Schools - The Levels of Danger are Numerous
Kati's Hope is a Mesothelioma foundation that was founded by Kati Maloney LoPresti, a Mesothelioma victim that died after repeated exposure to asbestos fibers in her father's work clothes. The foundation is dedicated to supporting the much needed medical research to find a cure for Mesothelioma and to help patients and their families devastated by the diagnosis of malignant Mesothelioma.
Kati's Story
Kati was born to a large family on the west side of Cleveland. Like children in many large families, Kati to chose to help out with the family laundry. Every week, she shook the dust out of her father's work clothes before putting them in the washer with the rest of the family's clothing. Unfortunately, that dust contained asbestos fibers as her father was a worked in an asbestos factory. Every day when he returned home from work, the kids would all rush to meet their father in his asbestos filled clothes.
In 1979, Kati's uncle died from Mesothelioma. He too was a worker in an asbestos factory. In 1980, Kati's father died from Mesothelioma. In 2002, Kati was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. She went into the hospital thinking she had asthma. The doctor found a tumor in her chest but told her it was operable. Hearing the word "tumor", Kati asked about Mesothelioma as she had distinct memories of watching her father and uncle die from the disease. The doctor originally said no but then an autopsy confirmed the worst. Kati has since participated in many experimental and clinical trials for various drugs, including Alimta. While the treatments stopped the progress of the cancer, they did not totally kill it.
In 2005, Kati celebrated being a 3-year survivor of the deadly cancer. In 2007, she passed away. The real question is how many more people are out there that have experienced second-hand exposure and might have the early stages of Mesothelioma already?
