New Drug in Development May Help Fight Cancer

While we have made incredible medical advances over the last several decades, we still struggle to understand and control the deadly disease of cancer. Cancer develops in a variety of ways, sometimes appearing with no symptoms or warnings. The development of mesothelioma has been directly linked to exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers. Although symptoms take decades to surface, cancer itself claims lives much faster.

The underlying process of cancer involves the rapid and uncontrolled growth of cancer cells within the body. Over time these cells may develop into tumors, creating an even greater threat to the health of the body. Doctors and scientists alike have been searching for a cure from this terrible disease for many years and recent studies have begun to show some hope in the fight against cancer.

While researching drugs to help prevent radiation damage from a nuclear event, scientists have had a major breakthrough in creating a drug that not only helps those exposed to radiation, but also those suffering from cancer. Andrei Gudkov, a scientist at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has been working on the newest drug to fight cancer, which is currently has the code name CBLB502. After working for years to develop a drug to combat cancer, Gudkov had the idea to use cancer’s own tactics against it.

When our cells are exposed to damaging radiation, they commit a form of cellular suicide, also known as apoptosis. Cancer cells, on the other hand, work to block this process, allowing dangerous tumors to form. Gudkov and a team of scientists use CBLB502 to block apoptosis just like cancer, however, they block the suicide of healthy cells. This causes healthy cells to regenerate rather than the dangerous cancerous cells brought out by radiation and other forms of exposure to cancer-causing materials.

This drug remains in development, however, the scientists at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute are optimistic that the drug will allow us to better fight the deadly disease of cancer that has already claimed so many lives.
