Mesothelioma - What You're In For If You've Been Diagnosed
If you've been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you have just suffered what is sure to be a terrible psychological setback. Learning that you have a disease with no cure is never a positive thing, and you probably have several thoughts running through your mind all at once. If you've considered pursuing legal avenues, you may be hesitant to do so, as many people are when they begin to understand that there very well could be a lengthy fight involved.
However, once you see below the type of treatment or treatments you could face, you may want to start thinking more deeply about holding those responsible for your asbestos exposure and your medical condition responsible.
Mesothelioma Treatment Protocols
There are three prominent treatment options for those with malignant mesothelioma, and these options are explained briefly below:
Surgery
Surgery on the affected lung tissue could take on several forms, depending on how far the disease has spread. For instance, doctors may only remove the lung's lining wall, or mesothelium, if they feel that it would be advisable. If the condition has spread further, then they may remove part of your lung as well. If fluid has gathered in the chest cavity, that could and should also be drained. In other words, surgery may be a common option, but it's also a seriously invasive treatment.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is growing in prevalence, and this therapy involves using high-powered x-rays for the purpose of killing malignant cells and/or reducing the size and slowing the spread of malignant tumors. Radiation can be administered with an external machine or by injecting the radiation materials into the localized area in order to attack the malignant cells.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the most widely-recognized therapy, as it has been used prominently with several forms of cancer. However, the patient pays a physical price for undergoing this treatment. Chemotherapy can involve pills or injections, and these chemicals attack the malignant cells and kill them off as much as possible.
Sometimes, the cure, as it's said, can be worse than the disease. Whether you undergo one or all three of these treatment options, you are sure to suffer greatly while these chemicals or intrusions invade your body, and regardless of which treatment you use, you will face a long recovery.
Mesothelioma is a tragic disease for many reasons, not the least of which is the amount of suffering every patient endures while trying to minimize the effects of the disease.
